Bachelor Episode 1 Recap

Wow!  I am so excited that the first episode is finally here!  I thought January 7 would never come.  I have watched every single season of this franchise (every one!), so to see my brother be the lead was absolutely crazy.  Last night, was perhaps one of the coolest nights of my life.

Ok...so here's the deal...just like last season on the Bachelorette, I'm going to recap every Tuesday.  I'll show you some pictures (sometimes they'll be behind the scenes, sometimes not), I'll answer your questions, I'll give you my my favorite parts from the episode and I'll give you my two cents.  I will not spoil anything, so you don't have to worry about that!  If you ever wanted to know what the Bachelor's family was thinking as the episode was airing...this is your place.  Let's  go...

I was extra fashionable yesterday and wore my Team Sean shirt.  Sean's business partner had these made during the Bachelorette...if they become available again, I'll let you know.

And my kids wore their favorite shirts too.

My kids were super excited all day yesterday.  Even though they're just 3 and 4, they know what's going on.  This has been a family experience...and they're a part of the family.  They know that Sean was on the Bachelorette but that Emily picked Jef instead of him (it's funny because they can identify Emily, Jef and Arie when they see their pictures).  And now, they know that Sean is the Bachelor and that he's on a show looking for a girl to love.

I glanced down at my Pandora yesterday and saw this...super weird to see my little brother on my Pandora!

Just your average day of running on the treadmill at the gym and watching your little brother on Live with Kelly and Michael ;).

Kensington and me during a commercial break last night.  We're excited girls!

Ok...the bullet points:

1. Yes, we let our kids watch the show.  We wanted them to see themselves, Uncle Sean and the pretty ladies.  We explain things as the show unfolds and will continue to let them watch it as the season progresses.

2. At the beginning of the episode, I really was doing face time with Sean on the i-Pad (that wasn't manufactured) .  He had been in California a few days and the first episode was about to tape...it was the last time I talked to him for several, several weeks (actually, almost 2 months).  I really missed him when he was gone.

3. The scenes you saw with Sean and my kids at my parents' house were really easy to film because he really does play with them like that all.the.time.  Every week, Sean sees my kids and they play.  He doesn't just turn on the "uncle" when the camera crew shows up.  Toddlers wouldn't participate with someone who was just doing it for the cameras...the relationship between him and my kiddos is genuine.

4. I was asked a lot when the show started filming...the answer is September.  We've waited months and months for last night's episode.

5. And yes.  I do talk a lot.  Sean tweeted me immediately and said he meant it with love (when he said his older sister talked so much that he grew up to be a man that didn't talk very much because he never had the chance).  No one in my family would argue that point!  And trust me...he's super, super happy I do talk a lot...I keep mom and dad busy with what I'm saying and they don't have nearly as much time to quiz him about his life...it's a perfect balance.

I really liked last night's episode.  I thought he had a lot of really beautiful women to meet and get to know.  I felt bad for the ones who had mishaps (the girl who tumbled, the girl who sang).  I really liked what Kacie B. was wearing...she gets my vote for best dressed of the night.  I did think there was a wee bit too much spray tan going on several girls...ok...a lot too much on many girls.  But overall...based on what I saw, there were some fun, interesting and gorgeous girls there to meet my brother.

My favorite part of last night's episode...well Arie of course!  That opening scene was hysterical!  Sean and Arie really are friends...that was very genuine (and comical!).  Whoever came up with the idea of Arie showing up, should get a raise.

Last season, I hosted watch parties every Monday night in my home but this season, I just wanted to sit back in my pjs and watch with my little family.  (My mom and dad were at home watching it by themselves too...after it finished airing, we talked on the phone and swapped notes.)  Last night was really, really special for us.  I wasn't surprised by anything (that's a perk of being the Bachelor's big sister...I get to know everything in advance), but I was just proud of how Sean carried himself.  He was sweet, sincere, charming, funny and pretty darn handsome if I do say so myself.  I can't wait for this season to unfold.  It's going to be fantastic!

One last thing...if you're new to me and my blog...here are some things you might want to know.  First, I'm a foodie blogger, so check out my recipes and read family stories of what we eat and how we entertain over at Mix and Match Mama.

And...if you know me, you know one of my besties Sheaffer.  In honor of the Bachelor, she's going to be featuring A Bachelorette Told Me To over on her blog every week.  You must check this out too!

Ask me questions...I'll be answering them in the comment section and in next week's post.  Happy Tuesday!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these behind the scenes pics of your fam. The one of the kids in their t-shirts is too cute. :) I was so proud of Sean in last night's episode, so I cannot imagine how proud you guys must have been. Looking so forward to reading your insights every week. And you have to know, this isn't just awesome for you...it's awesome for all of your friends too! We love you! :)

Reading your tweets last night was just as fun as the episode! So fun to picture the sister he was talking about. I laughed out loud when he made that comment about you! So cute.

I have to agree I laughed out loud at his comment about you as we'll! I have a younger brother & we have the same dynamic, I am a Non stop chatter box! Lol It was so cool knowing who he was talking about since I have been a blog follower for a little while now! Love the kids shirts, I bet they were just so excited last night! Sean was definitely the most sincere & sweet bachelor I have ever seen & I have been watching since Season 1! Crying like a baby at every finale lol! I can't wait to continue to watch Sean's journey & your families. Thanks for sharing!:)

I enjoyed the show last night and thought Sean was a super gentleman! I do have a question though...does Sean (or any bachelor/bachelorette) get to see the 'contestants' prior to the opening ceremony; like pictures or video? OR is the opening ceremony the first time that he gets to see them?

Mix and Match Mama said...

I can't speak for other seasons but I know that Sean didn't meet or see a single girl beforehand. He knew nothing about them.

I was so excited to wake up this morning to come to your blog. I've been following since Sean was on last season. My question is how long does that first cocktail party actually last? I know we only see the highlights of it. I'm always amazed the Bachelor/Bachelorette can remember everyones name for that first rose ceremony.

My husband watched the show last night and said that he thought Sean was a genuine guy and would do very well on the show (something he normally never says)! So happy for your family and am excited to watch the season and see how everything turns out!

Ahhh I LOVED seeing your family on tv last night! I swear you guys have the most adorable children! And the way their Uncle Sean is with them is incredible :) I cannot wait to watch more!

I thought Sean seemed so kind and genuine last night and that he really handled some awkward situations well. My favorite part, though, was when he prayed before the first girls got out of the limo. That shows his true character right there!

I am SO excited for your recaps every week, so fun to hear how Sean's family views this whole experience! Last night's episode was great and my fav part was when Arie was there in the beginning...my husband and I laughed so hard, they were pretty funny! Also, liked when he said my older sister never stops talking, you could tell he meant it with love! Looks like it's going to be a great season, can't wait to watch it unfold!

Hi Shay! I've been a follower since Sean was on the Bachelorette and I love your blog...such a fun read everytime I stop by. I've also watched this show since season 1 so I am a huge fan! My question for you is where did Sean watch last night's episode (I know he was in NYC for appearances yesterday so yesterday may be a little different since he wasn't home) and where do you anticipate he will watch future episodes? It's weird to think he'd just be sitting at home watching himself on TV...how fun would it be to watch it with him!

Thanks for sharing your family with us!

So fun getting the inside scoop! I am so happy to hear that Sean is as genuine as he seems on TV! Love the kiddos shirts, too cute!

I think my favorite part of his and Arie's conversation was the break up part when Sean said "I can't say it's not you, it's me because it is them" Haha!!

Orange is NOT a good color on any lady. Spray tan was outta control!!

Last night I liked Diana in her cute chevron skirt and I thought Des was sweet.

This is so much fun!!

Alice said...

And I couldn't believe he picked Lindsay after her drunken debauchery!! Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a glass of wine or 2, but I thought that was a horrible first impression!

What did you tell your kids about 50 Shades of CRAZY lady?!? LOL!!

Danielle Carroll said...

I love that even your kiddos were rocking their Uncle Seanie support. So fashionable, lol.

And I agree, Kacie was the best dressed! Loved, loved her outfit! But I have to root for my fellow Seattleite, Catherine, even though I do think Kacie is super sweet.

Sean watched the show last night from his hotel room in NYC (he tweeted out a pic of him in bed watching it). Last season, he watched most of the episodes with his close friends at home, watched one with our cousin and his wife and watched one with me (and maybe one with my parents...I can't remember). Yup...he just sits with those he loves and watches like everyone else.

Mix and Match Mama said...

From what I've been told, the first episode lasts over 24 hours (from the time the crew shows up to the time the crew leaves). They're up until the next morning for sure!

Kara said...

I am so proud of Sean. He represents himself and your family so well. It is still surreal for me to see him and you guys all over my TV, but I love it! This should be an exciting season to say the least. Love you.

Melissa Gibbs said...

Loved the first episode! Praying Sean finds his soulmate and someone that shares his values and beliefs. I love how he is with your kiddoes and how close your family is!

Can't wait to see how the season plays out. Looks like the producers picked some dramatic girls, yikes!

I have to agree about the spray tans too..wow! :-)

I was wondering if you or your parents or husband drink alcohol? I noticed you had iced tea when you toasted Sean and was wondering if it goes against your religion.

John and Court said...

I noticed right before the girls started coming out Sean closed his eyes for a little bit. Do you think or know if he was he praying??

I just found that moment encouraging. I've been praying for him and this season too. My prayer is for others to come to Christ through Him and THE BACHELOR. How awesomely crazy would that be =)

As my little brother and husband (also with a big sister) are both more quiet and laid back. Just part of the birth order, I believe!!

So excited for this season!! My professor actually mentioned the show in class yesterday much to our surprise but he mentioned he knew y'alls grandparents and that they were just as excited. My favorite scene was also the one with Arie. I know the show focuses on finding love but I think its just as awesome that people end up finding long lasting friendships too. Looking forward to your blogs!!
Quick question....Do you know if the he got to have any technology (computer, ipad, phone) with thin to keep them updated with whats going on outside of his journey?

You are SO refreshing and your joy and love for your family is so contagious. As a fellow Bachelor fan (and Mix & Match blog reader), I'm SO excited to read about your "insider" info on this season. I'm also excited that we have such a wholesome and godly young man as the Bachelor! Bringing it up a few notches and I'm LOVING IT!!

Blessings to you & your entire family throughout this crazy process ;-)

LOVED seeing your cute family on last night!!! It is going to be such a fun season!!!!!! My favorite Sean comment was 50 Shades of Drunk. Best line EVER. Your recaps are going to be so fun!!!

I have been following your blog for awhile and you are just the cutest family!! How neat that your brother is the Bachelor! And I love how genuine he is. Excited to watch this season and also get the inside scoop from your blog!! :)

Big fan of Sean's and wish him all the best. Just sad that he is off the market. Being a Christian, family oriented girl and living in Dallas, TX, I was hoping he wouldn't pick anyone like Womack did! Wish him all the best though!!! Think I could clone him?? Hahaha! JK

Lots of questions! 1. Sean was too busy filming the show to do much else. I know he read several books while he was gone. (Probably not 50 Shades of Grey). 2. We're not against drinking alcohol at all. As Christians, we don't frown on those who do. I don't drink a lot of alcohol because I would rather eat my calories than drink them (so I don't drink soda either!). 3. Sean tweeted last night that he was praying when the first limo drove up. :)

Do your husband and parents drink? Thank you. I was curious because in my religion (LDS) we can't so I was curious about other religions - no judgement, just questions :)

My husband isn't really a big drinker because he's a health nut. And when I say nut...I mean he's flippin' crazy over eating healthy! So, his reason is the same as mine (but I'm not a health nut like him!). As for my parents, they don't because they say they don't like the way it tastes. My mom collects wine from her travels but she prefers to look at the pretty bottles. My dad drinks a lot of Diet Coke. We're pretty boring in the beverage department!

It seemed like there were a few ladies who had a bit too much! I personally like Kacie B and thought her comments were hilarious! I have been following you for a long time but first time commenting!

Fun episode last night! My favorite part was seeing all your family! It's just the cutest thing that he is so involved with your lives! I also like that he didn't make out with a bunch of girls!!!

His personality is coming out SO much more this season! He seems funny and humble!!!

I adore your brother & absolutely LOVED last night's show! How exciting for you & your family! I cannot wait to watch it all unfold this season & hopefully see Sean end up with the girl of his dreams!

I have been following your blog for about 6 months and love keeping up with it! I think it is awesome that you are doing the "recaps" because it is neat to see it from a family members perspective. I think Sean is a great, standup, christian man (he is also handsome which is a bonus)! That is something very admirable in a man! -- My boss went to school with Sean, so he got me to "follow" Sean as he was on the Bachelorette. I can't wait to continue to watch Sean's journey!

I thought about you & your parents the whole time last night & couldn't wait to see what you wrote, too hehe. Cute pics as always and thanks for sharing. This is definitely the best season ever! God bless Sean and each of you on this journey!! <3

Thanks for the fabulous post about last night. I enjoyed reading from a completely different perspective. I was very impressed with how Sean handled himself as well last night. His values and beliefs were very evident in his actions, words and decisions he made. I can't wait to watch more and read your recaps each week!

Loved seeing him with your kids. So so so cute!
What is it the Sean is handed as his drink when he gets inside to the party?

Mix and Match Mama said...

I have no idea what was in Sean's drink that night...if he were smart, it would have been Red Bull. That boy needed some caffeine to hang out with all of those women!

Ranisa said...

Loved the show! I am always the one to get the biggest kick out of the oddest comment. Such as "I have a rape whistle" directed a the 50 shades girl. THANK YOU! Did she get it?

Hi! My friends and I enjoy your blog and we were wondering if the producers took Sean's preferences in terms of looks, values, etc into consideration when casting the women for the show. Also, were you surprised by any of the women he gave roses to? (You don't have to name names).

Katy Casteel said...

So, reading that he doesn't meet/see pictures of the ladies beforehand...is there like a bug in his ear telling him everyone's names?! haha I even watching the back stories on these women could not keep up with 26 names like that!

Truly love reading your blog- whether it's Bachelor talk, travel talk, or just Instagram photos! I was watching with my Dad (who never watched the Bachelor before)& he was cracking up when I was like well, Shay says this on her blog. You guys are seriously the cutest family! Can't wait to follow your families journey during this season!!

:) Erin

From what I understand, the producers did want Sean to be excited about the girls coming out of the limo...so they talked to him about what he looks for when he dates and they tried to give him some girls with those characteristics. The show won't work if the lead person isn't attracted to someone, so they want to make sure he has girls that work for him. I wasn't really surprised by anyone who got out of the limo. (Ok, 50 Shades kind of surprised me but other than that...they all seemed like possible candidates!)

I am so excited for your family and I love the fact that America will get to witness how God desires a man to honor and love a woman as He loves us, through Sean's example. My husband honors me in that same way and it seems like your hubby does to. My question though is how important is Sean's faith in deciding who he ends up with? Thanks!

Karen Peterson said...

I have to admit, I wasn't that excited when I heard Sean was going to be the new Bachelor, but after watching Monday night, I'm on board. He really does seem like a great guy.

Mix and Match Mama said...

Sean's faith is the most important thing in his life. He would be the first person to tell you that. Who Sean marries will be someone who shares his faith.

Anonymous said...

That's awesome! I am so glad America will get to witness that and I am so excited for him and his future wife to be! To God be the glory!!

I just stumbled across your blog and love it! Your recap is spot on and I look forward to reading them throughout the season! I actually blogged about some life lessons that The Bachelor has taught me over the decades and I'm glad to say that Sean is one of the good lessons. I hope he found love!

I am not new to your blog. I have been a lurker here, Conservative Mommy (I miss) and your food Mix Match Mama (love) for several years. Sean was my first pick last year. I kept staring at him, like I actually knew him. It was so weird. Then when I connected the dots, I realized I had seen pictures of him throughout the years. Funny.
I do it all works out for him. I look toward to your updates!!!
I also share your food blog with all my friends. It is wonderful.
